NYC Moving and Storage
By: Seth Miller

Several companies that offer local, long distance or international moving services operate in New York City. You can contact them at any time, night or day.

In many cases, the goods handled by them have to be stored due to several reasons. Such warehousing can be for a short term, or, particularly in the case of

international transfer, for fairly long periods.

A moving company should have licenses from the Department of Transport, Federal Highway Association and the Department of Consumer Affairs. Reputable movers have their own fleet of air-ride suspension trucks, equipment and well-trained personnel who can handle both residential and corporate relocation. They offer the full range of services including packing, transport and unpacking.

Good movers have a wide range of facilities to store anything from clothes and household items to priceless works of art. There are clean, secure, fireproof and

sometimes climate-controlled. Some even have exclusive arrangements for storing wine!

Charges are usually based on the volume of goods involved, and could be on a per-day basis or for longer timeframes. Higher rates may be applicable to some articles like pianos, artwork and sensitive electronic equipment that require special care.

In the case of corporate relocation, security and efficiency are very important. Extra care is given to delicate equipment and gadgets. Sensitive documents are transferred in high-security containers.

Open-air parking lots are generally used to store cars, but some companies also offer indoor garage facilities. This would naturally involve a higher cost.

The rate for moving locally is on an hourly basis. Here, local means within fifty miles. Long distance charges depend on the volume, weight and distance involved. There may be some scope for bargaining for long-distance moving. In any case, a binding quotation should be obtained from the mover to avoid hassles after the job is completed.
